Mother’s day is like seeing a rainbow… it is just something to look on and enjoy.

My 93 year old Uncle tells me that as a small child I carried books around and insisted that people read to me. He claims I sought “knowledge”… Considering some of the books included Yogi Bear and Tennessee Tuxedo; I think I was after entertainment and when a grown-up person said: “Smarter than the average bear…” or “Hey boo… boo” I was amazed.
60 years later this act of kindness still resonates with me. He did not have to read to me or put up with the demands of a small kid… but he did. Perhaps it is one of the reason’s I have views and values that put such a high premium on civil interactions.
When I moved to my new house…. I did not notice the Confederate flag on display across the street from me and I don’t care. I learned long ago that what is in a person’s heart is not reflected in a flag they show. 51 years ago I learned that some of the most open/honest and dependable friends I gained were more accepting of a person of color than those who grew up North.
If I expect people to judge me by my character…. I have to be willing to do the same.
The new year is here… and I start to wonder:
The Wiz toured the US in 1976… so that must be when I saw it. Not sure anymore why I went but it blew my mind with joy… positive thoughts and fun. They brought it back to TV live and got it right.
I hated the movie which forgot it was all about the child coming of age… Going out into the world to getaway only to discover the value of family that …when one discovers that snowflakes have meaning and that moment when you want time to be your friend… while you still can return Home!
They got it right!
