After 7 years, I reach 1,000 typed pages posted to this blog. I feel happy that I can still roll paper into a machine and place words on page. The words are often worth less than the paper they appear on but still the produce comfort & smiles for the author… that is enough for me.
Sometimes I have to recall that the primary reason to type and post is just for the fun of it. Not to give profound thoughts. Not to pass on wisdom. Not to become deluded by my own image of the greatness of my verbiage. Just to enjoy pressing keys and seeing words on paper is enough. When I recall this simple fact… words rush to page… without being blocked by thoughts of “why… what…” etc.
Using the same Olympia Portable (1961) that I used for my first post… I now post #990. I thank everyone who has taken the time to read, comment and read some more. You bring joy to me…
My 93 year old Uncle tells me that as a small child I carried books around and insisted that people read to me. He claims I sought “knowledge”… Considering some of the books included Yogi Bear and Tennessee Tuxedo; I think I was after entertainment and when a grown-up person said: “Smarter than the average bear…” or “Hey boo… boo” I was amazed.
60 years later this act of kindness still resonates with me. He did not have to read to me or put up with the demands of a small kid… but he did. Perhaps it is one of the reason’s I have views and values that put such a high premium on civil interactions.
If I were thinking in a logical manner… the expense to overhaul a 20 year old bike would not be worth it. But what price is joy? When you ride a bike over 8,000 miles it is impossible to recall old memories as you add new ones. What price is a unexpected smile… a retrieved feeling? Not an old bike at all… a memory retrieval tool that also creates new ones… such a thing is priceless!
In just 4 years, Iowa will host the 50th bicycle ride across the state. I can just imagine all the people who will return for one last ride… as well as the many thoughts of those who no longer take to the road but still ride in our thoughts.
It’s been over 40 years when my job sat me behind a computer terminal… 30 years since I bought my first PC… I use a computer everyday… but for fun I use a typewriter!
My Underwood has its Western Union serial number WU5739R and I checked the number under the foot is 205320. I guessed 1909 based on design, but the serial number places it at 1908. For me 1908 is a great year for an Underwood.
