Congratulations on your repair. I really like Underwoods. They are hard to beat. Best typing action of any in my collection. My 1947 Rhythm Touch (S model I think) is the best action of any typewriter I ever used.
I agree with you regarding the pleasant typing feel of these machines. Since I am currently immersed in the innards of an Underwood No.4, usually with a puzzled expression on my face, I’d love to hear any details of what you are doing with that No. 5. Like what spring and where. And vice versa, I’d be happy to help with any questions you might have. I’ll next be struggling with improving the backspace action, the end-of-line bell, and alignment of shifted and non-shifted characters. I’ve got a feeling we are both just “that far” from turning frustrating machines into superb typers.

Bill:
1947 would be the year I always think of regarding my father’s Underwood (the very first typewriter I ever used and set the standard in my mind).
Tony:
The next time I post regarding this typewriter I will include a close up of the spring I re-set.
