Been looking at boots to use for Grand Canyon hike…
I got my bicycle back today… one of the things I had done was to change the gearing from a today’s typical 50/34T to a 40/36T which was something common in the 60’s. What use to be touring… is now considered Adventure… wait long enough and what was becomes the new thing (like typewriters)…
Phantom Ranch, Grand Canyon… if my reservation is accepted; in 2017 I will do what I had hoped to do at age 50; hike the Grand Canyon to the bottom and stay at the Phantom Ranch. 11 years late… but better late than never. Such actions happen when you decide to type on a 110 year old typewriter.
Been thinking about what I would like to do… haven’t done a marathon (for the simple reason that running 26 miles has zero appeal for me). On the other hand walking that distance is a horse of a different color.
After 12 years I have 25 Volumes of “The Complete Peanuts” and thought I was done. There is a 26th due in November (RATS!).
While typing on my 1937 Underwood (Noiseless) it kept causing problems… and I was reminded of a strip when Lucy buys a balloon but is unable to blow it up. She ties a string to it anyway and drags it along behind her.
I continue to type… and post it anyway (one of the lesson learned from Peanuts)!
On PBS they have been showing profiles of Presidents. In 1960 Kennedy talked about getting “America’s edge back”… which sounded a lot like “making America Great Again”. In 1964 Johnson questioned the temperament of Goldwater… (which sounded oddly familiar).
Presidents lied and misled and concealed…. the only difference between then and now is that back then “hope” was part of the campaign as well. “The only thing to fear is fear itself…” “Some see things and ask why? I see the things and ask why not”… I misquote.
However I had a sense that in past times there was a belief in the power of good and no matter what presented itself today… tomorrow was another day.
Another ride done… I look forward to another.
I am already planning for next year’s bicycle ride across Iowa…
Temps as high as 95 and as low as 65… some rain… tall corn… 19,000 bicycles… just another great bicycle ride across Iowa!
